How Remote and In-Person Dynamics Power Innovation

Did you know Grassland Ventures has team members spanning from British Columbia to Ontario — and even across the pond?

While many of us call Calgary and Regina home, we’ve embraced a remote-first culture that celebrates flexibility, collaboration, and connection. Remote work lets us stay close to what matters most at home, but it’s the combination of working from anywhere and meaningful in-person gatherings that truly helps us thrive.

So, how do we deliver exceptional service to our clients while keeping our team engaged, valued, and connected? Let’s take a closer look at how Grassland Ventures makes remote work work.

Staying Connected Across the Map

With clients and teammates scattered across Canada and beyond, seamless communication is non-negotiable. Open and frequent dialogue keeps us aligned, no matter where we’re located. We prioritize overlapping work hours to create opportunities for real-time problem-solving and collaboration.

Our communication tools of choice – Slack and Google Meet – make daily interactions possible, but personal accountability takes it further. Each team member ensures that action items are tackled most effectively, whether through a quick message or a more in-depth video call. Daily stand-up messages add the cherry on top, giving everyone a chance to review and get a pulse check as to what others have planned for the day.

Working across several different time zones means regular check-ins are essential. These meetings go beyond project updates – they’re a chance to check the team’s pulse, celebrate wins, share thoughts on a successful client pitch, or commiserate over the freezing weather in one part of the country.

The Power of In-Person Connections

Even as a remote-first company, we recognize the importance of face-to-face interactions. That’s why we host an annual Grassland Adventures Retreat where the entire team comes together, alongside smaller project-based meetups throughout the year.

These gatherings are game-changers for team dynamics. They provide the space to move beyond small talk and foster deeper connections. A teammate who’s just a face on a screen becomes someone you know as a coach, a parent, or a dedicated guitarist. Understanding the person behind the job title strengthens bonds and enhances collaboration.

In-person interactions build trust, camaraderie, and insight into each other's motivations and working styles. This translates into tighter teamwork and better outcomes for our clients and partners.

Creating Space to Connect

In addition to our in-person gatherings and daily stand-ups, we have also introduced monthly catch-ups in rotating small groups. Each month, we break out into small virtual groups to give everyone a chance to connect with teammates they might not typically work with day-to-day.

The positive response from the team has exceeded our expectations, proving just how valuable it is to step outside our usual circles.

“The monthly catch ups we have at GV provide an opportunity to catch up with colleagues you wouldn't normally get to interact with on a regular basis. Because these conversations are completely unrelated to work they allow us to connect with each other even though many of us are not in the same physical location.” said Aaron Krogsgaard, Technical Project Lead.

How Our Culture Drives Client and Partner Success

Blending a remote-first approach with intentional in-person interactions has created a strong team dynamic that directly benefits our clients.

Take our recent meetup in Calgary as an example. Team members flew in from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario to tackle several concurrent initiatives together. This allowed for breakthroughs that might not have happened over video calls alone. Collaborating face-to-face gave us the momentum to dive deeper into solving problems, ultimately refining solutions that will deliver lasting value for our clients' needs. It’s moments like these that remind us how blending remote flexibility with in-person creativity can spark exceptional outcomes.
